Imaginary Trolls

Postby TerrifyingDaedricFoe » 30 Oct 2012, 11:00

One of the rumours going around Anvil is that Newheim the Portly hasn't been seen for days. As he is the harbourmaster and Anvil is a port town this should be a cause for alarm. However, people will comment that actually the harbour is running more efficiently now that Newheim isn't in charge (that's not important, it just explains why no-one has gone looking for him yet). The rumours will also mention that Newheim's sister Ulrika Ogre-Face is worried about him.

Like a good little PC, you wander over to Ulrika's house and ask her about Newheim. She says that his house is locked, which is highly unusual, so she thinks he may have left town. She isn't sure though, and wants you to break in and see if you can find anything.

You'll find Newheim hiding in the pantry. As soon as you open the door he'll scream about not letting the trolls in. This is a bit puzzling, as there aren't any trolls in the house. If you continue to question him, eventually he'll say that the trolls arrived just after Jesan Sextius left.

With this new line of inquiry, you can then go and talk to Jesan. With a bit of persuasion he'll admit giving Newheim a potion that made him imagine trolls, as revenge for Newheim heckling Jesan when he's singing at the Count's Arms. He didn't realise the potion would last so long, and will agree that the joke's over now and the magical effect should be removed. He will point you to a shady alchemist who runs a dingy little shop in the poor quarter of Anvil.

The shady alchemist can obviously tell you've got plenty of cash, so he'll try to exploit you at every opportunity. He knows exactly what's wrong with Newheim (he's the one who made the troll potion!), but he doesn't let on. Instead he insists on you paying him 50 septims to examine Newheim. When he's done that he determines that the best cure is a potion of dispel, which will cost you 100 gold (you can't barter him for it because his barter function disables when you leave his shop). If you cough up Newheim is cured, leaving him with no memory of anything that happened after he drank the troll potion. If you ask him nicely for a reward he'll tell you to go away. However, if you return to Ulrika she'll give you a nice enchanted necklace or something.

Of course, you can cast dispel on Newheim or give him a potion yourself, and cut out the shady alchemist altogether. It just requires you to use your initiative.

I thought you were seeing imaginary trolls all over the forums when I read the title.

Definitely sounds neat, though.

I've just realised the unintended pun. The imaginary trolls should be shouting vile abuse at poor Newheim, haha :scamp:

Will I be able to ask the shady alchemist if I can buy that Imaginary Troll potion? Obviously it won't work on any NPCs in-game so perhaps he could have some dialogue where he states that it's his secret and that he's not selling it or haggling with the Player. Just a little something to give it more immersion. Nice idea, TDF.

I have reserved the location for the shady alchemist in poor quarter in the smallest alley. :)
