[WIP]Gold Coast Shacks

Postby Saint_Jiub » 08 Jan 2013, 05:49

Hey all,

I whipped up some alternate textures for the Dunmer shack meshes that I thought we could use for fishing villages and the like along the Gold Coast. Take a look: http://i.imgur.com/siwWU.png

Is there any interest in this? I'm still fiddling with the colors and I'm not 100% on the bamboo walls, but I think it'd be good to have our own shacks rather than relying on the vanilla ones, which I feel are too dark and would stick out rather badly in our environments. Actually, I think we should have at least 3 shack/lowerclass model sets- one for the Gold Coast, one for Nibenay, and one for the Colovian Highlands.

EDIT: Oh, and the green coloration on the foundation is from the model, not the texture (the actual texture has more of a reddish/gray hue). If anyone knows how to get rid of that, all the better.

Very nice. I think this one in particular would work very well for nibenese villages. I imagine these being built on low ground near a river that occasionally floods. The water would not rise above the stone base, and there would be planks connecting the different houses..

I'm not sure if bamboo works too well for the gold coast. I would think palm wood is used, since it seems to be common in the region

The textures look nice, but the model is not quite right here. It's a dunmer-shack.

Shacks are really not too hard to get modelled. So I would prefer myself if someone drew a well-thought-through concept for cyrodillic shacks. Only my two cents regarding the matter.

Yes I would rather have on modeled as well for those reasons Worsas. We don't need one in Colovia anyway, their poorest houses are the "nord" houses from vanilla. Nibenay could certainly use some shacks with the sort of textures Jiub has used here though, fits the influence.

The roof-texture is nice and would fit the Gold Coast (and thus could be used on alternate models, too)

I could also imagine Anvil having some of these shacks in poorer districts, no? Maybe outside the city walls, fishermen and all that.

Here's an in-game mock-up village I made in about 5 minutes last night to test the models: http://i.imgur.com/3lInv.jpg

As far as them being "Dunmer" shacks, I mean, it's a shack. I can see about maybe drawing up some concepts, but at the end of the day it's gonna be four walls, some support posts, and a thatched roof of some sort. :P There are areas where I think new models are necessary, but I don't really think this is one of them when there's something from the vanilla game that we can easily modify into something usable.

SamirA- Assuming you're talking about the architecture in places like Seyda Neen, I think we could still benefit from having some housing that's a step below that. The Nordic set, to me, is more along the lines of the farmhouses and cottages of Oblivion: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:OB-place-Weye.jpg, leaving a space for shacky-type housing like the houses along the IC waterfront: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:OB-place-ShackForSale.jpg These aren't meant for all of Colovia anyhow, like I said-- pretty much just for the Gold Coast where palm trees are abundant, allowing for quick, easy, DIY shelter from the elements.

Here's a NifSkope picture of the latest textures, btw: http://i.imgur.com/4JGt8.jpg Bamboo is gone.

I could definitely see some poor fishermen living in those shacks somewhere along the shore of the Abecean Sea.

I actually think the shacks should be different. As is, they look too much like shacks from Morrowind.
Here is an interesting idea. Take a look at the forests and various raw materials that people in Cyrodiil have access to and make a shack out of that. I see the bamboo textures, but where do we have lots of bamboo type looking plants growing?
Hopefully you understand what I am talking about here.

Although I am guessing you are using the MW shack meshes for this.

Shacks made of palm trees I think would be a defining look here. there are alot of palm trees growing and I would think that they would be a natural material to use, not only because their wood can be used for framing, but because their leaves can be used for roofing and wall material.

This give me the idea of cool looking palm shacks; at least for the coastal regions anyway. Lets see, I think this may be my next project. If I do decide on it though, it will be Saturday before I can get around to do anything about it so dont wait on my account.(damn my job, they were supposed to cut shift hours down but for whatever reason, have kept em as 60 hours; lots of that is sitting around though with no pc access)
Tarius: I have now conquered the galaxy twice and am working on a third. Once thats out of me, I will be back to work.
TDF: Which game is that(I assume its a game and not real life)
The Khan: If it was real life, we would know about it. And I dont think he means this Galaxy.
Tarius: Yes, I really lead a secret double life where I am a galactic overlord.

I eliminated the bamboo in later versions for wood planks similar to what the docks are made of: http://i.imgur.com/4JGt8.jpg

Is there not some edited shack models in SHOTN?

These are definately dunmer, they will not be used.

The textures work though is nice. Now put that art talent to good use and come up with a newer design that is more Cyrodiil.

I'm assuming that's what he means. Before I commit anything to paper, here's a few interesting styles I've found:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_512VEbm7xB0/S ... 0-h/13.jpg

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_512VEbm7xB0/S ... 00-h/8.jpg
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_512VEbm7xB0/S ... 00-h/2.jpg

Does anything jump out at anyone as a good direction for me to go in? I have my personal preferences, of course, but I'll keep those to myself for the time being.

I'm not really sure about any of them to be honest.

If the one scamp quoted were on the ground rather than stilts (though stilts could be used in water areas) and the roof less gigantic, it might be a place to begin for Nibenay. Nibenay should have a whimsical element to it and that is certainly an interesting style.

I liked that one because the roof reminds me of a boat that somebody has built a house around. It'd be cool in Nibenay, I think, as though settlers sailed up the Niben River to an empty patch of land, then used their canoes as a base to build their houses around.

Well, that's certainly the plan. I'm just trying to nail down how exactly I want the shack to look. Right now I'm thinking it'll be based on old Italian shepherd's huts but with a palm frond roof.
