The Languages of Province: Cyrodiil

Postby SamirA » 05 Feb 2011, 23:44

Here I will post useful words with their translations in English. These words come from languages that will be present in a significant manner in Province: Cyrodiil. These languages include Yoku (the Redguard language which will be featured in western Cyrodiil and especially Sutch), Ayleid (The language of the wild elves of Cyrodiil, these will be found in ruins across Cyrodiil), and perhaps some Akaviri (The Akaviri play a significant role in the history of Cyrodiil).

Ayleid:
adonai - lordly
agea - lore, knowledge
amaraldane - heralds
av - from
ayammis - life
barra - wear
baune - mighty
belle - thunderous
brelyeis - beech trees
garlas - caverns
goria - ugly
gravia - obscure
haelia - terrible
karan - armor
kynd - child
latta - light
lattia - shines
loria - darkens, wanes
mafre - frost
magicka - magic
malatu - truth
mallari - gold
math - home
mathmerld - exiled
nou - our
pellani - outsiders
Pelin-el - star-made knight
relleis - streams
ry - as
sa - so
sila - shines
sou - your
suna - bless
sunnabe - blessed be
va - in
varla - star
varlais - stars
wel - sky
ye - and

from this we can surmise that Welkynd means sky-child or child of the sky.
(Also Beech trees should be used in Cyrodiil as the Ayleid have a word for this specific tree. They wouldn't use this word if there were no beech trees.)

Yoku:
ajcea - downward spiral
ansei - saint of the sword, sword singer (also used as an honorary title)
Hel Anseilak - communion with the saints of the sword
Koomu Alezer'i - we acknowledge
mluo - cheese
Na-Totambu - the ruling class of Yokuda and early Hammerfell
netu anseilim - turn back
no shira - a title used to denote noble birth
ra - great
Ra Gada - warrior wave
shehai - way of the spirit sword (also used as "spirit sword" itself)
tobr'a - useless thus evil

Here's someone who went through the trouble of recreating the Ayleid letters-albethem in drawing form-we'd probably need to find an actual font-maker if we want to have a high-quality set of vector-based runes to use.

After a brief search at freedict, I'm see I may have to search elsewhere to find Swahili and African curse-words. All I could find was like four different words which alternatively meant "donkey".

I'd posted some words I found but I've decided to move them into the Kali Mes discussion since this is a public forum.

An Ayleid font would be good if we could somehow get it onto scrolls like the Daedric font is in Morrowind. Then we could have some cool new scrolls to find in ruins.

That wouldnt be very hard.

WOE UPON YOU
alignment; font color; font size; font type; message

Thats all there is to what a scroll actually has written on it, as long as you can specify a font type and have the font file in the fonts folder of Data Files, you should be able to apply it to the game.
Tarius: I have now conquered the galaxy twice and am working on a third. Once thats out of me, I will be back to work.
TDF: Which game is that(I assume its a game and not real life)
The Khan: If it was real life, we would know about it. And I dont think he means this Galaxy.
Tarius: Yes, I really lead a secret double life where I am a galactic overlord.

Yes, the problem is having the font, and then making sure it works in the data files.

That is true. After a few minutes of searching and finding a simplistic program, I have found that despite being in the .fnt file format, the font files in the fonts folder in my data files folder are not in a format that is recognized by a basic font editor/creator program. Could be a couple reasons for this, one being the program is too simple and not up to date. I will continue searching a bit and see what I find.
(I like my computer having the ability to open all known formats of popular files, so when I find I need to open/edit a certain file type, I like finding something that will do it not only because I want the file open, but also because I like having the ability to.)

Edit: Found this: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/V ... il&id=3710
After a quick look, dont think any are in the correct format, plus they all seem to have different types of liscenses. So mabe, but mabe not for any use here, the search continues.
Also, it would appear fonts must be listed in the MW .ini file to be used, so if any new fonts get added, instructions on changing the .ini file would be needed, although its as simple as adding a line I would imagine based on the format.

Final update:
Ok, after some more looking, I have found that it can not likely be done.

Can I add a font?
Yes it is, but there's a big catch. Morrowind can only use three fonts
at any given time.

Apparently for all the foresight they had in allowing people to mod MW, they didnt think of allowing more then 3 fonts? If this is indeed true, then this may be a job for the MW patch project or something like that. In fact, if the ability to add more fonts is going to be introduced, then perhaps updating MW to allow the more standard true font type files is in order.

There is this though which I have not looked at, but apparently it allows you to create fonts for MW.

Not much point if you can only have 3 fonts at a time however.

Here is a link to Aldmeri languages. This is an interesting piece which contains some knowledge of Ayleid language and their alphabet. Lady N is also trying to find the file which the actual letters are in so that we may use them. We would need to make them in textures since Morrowind doesn't like extra fonts, but this can add some fantastic elements to our Ayleid ruins especially since we are going to flesh them out into more than simple abandoned ruins empty of all cultural items.

EDIT: We now have the PNG's of the known Ayleid letters, we can insert the rest from that guy's deviant art file as they match well with the analogs in the other aldmeri alphabets.
