PC_Col_C_Hat_W1_01-02 [Final]

Postby Worsas » 28 Jan 2014, 23:07

The headwear at the upper right. One version would be sufficient, but you can make more, if you like.

These are gong to be used along common clothing. western style.

Granting. Just for clarification this is two different items. PC_Col_C_Hat_W1_01 and PC_Col_C_Hat_W1_02. These should be the names of your nifs for ease of implementation in the CS.

You have the freedom just to make PC_Col_C_Hat_W1_01. But it is always nice to have variants of something.

Hmmm. First attempts, placeholder textures:

I'll need a decent cloth texture, and I think I'll do the rope in a woven blue/red kind of thing. Not very happy about the shape, and I don't really know where to take a second version. Any suggestions?

Perhaps a different band for the second, thicker possibly? You could make the piece with the straps hanging down into a leather decorative piece that the cloth attaches to, just a small belt of leather that arches over the forehead and turns into the two straps. You could add another sort of decorative piece to the forehead area. Things like that, also another color could be done. I think those are the small types of changes that could be done here to make a very similar style hat that is still unique enough to be a new version.

Infragris, are you familiar with texture sites you can visit to find suitable canvas and other motifs?

cgtextures.com is a very notorious and often used site for this kind of thing. But there are many others I don't know out of my mind right away.

Very often google-image search will deliver usable motifs too. As long as we modify our picture sources, I don't think we will ever run into legal problems (even, if we didn't).

Edit: The hat looks ok to me. How good it is going to look in the end, is mostly a matter of the texture, as it is the case with many other models.

www.radpour.com/images/stories/achaemen ... mortal.jpg As far as the shape goes, this is the image that I used as a reference originally. As you can see, it folds/bunches on itself at the top, rather than just coming to a peak. The seam across the crown could do with some fixing as well.

Aside from that, I really like this.

Uuuuugh. Spent about half an hour trying to figure out why my textures weren't working, only to realize I hadn't given them correct proportions.

I'll clean up UV issues later. The vertex colors don't seem to show up in the CS, is that normal + what can I do about it?

Just my opinion.
The band could do with making wider looks a tad bit small to me.

I think the folds could use some vertex paint or whatever to add shadow, as right now you kind of lose them the way the texture is. I don't think the band needs to be larger on this one, but for a variant a thicker band could be good. I feel like this texture is an upgrade in the quality, but it lacks the elements of the first texture that made it work. Those ripples and things in the fabric were very good.

I would say overlay this texture on top of the other one at like 50% opacity or so and blend in the shadows and folds.

I agree with SamirA, a variant with a leather headband would be cool.

Under circumstances I would just make something up. Add patterns, seams, buttons or foldings that were not provided in the concept. Sometimes such a thing is necessary to get something visually rounded up.

First version up. I'm not 100% sure if I set up the vertex shading thing correct in nifskope. Tips, corrections, etc. more than welcome.

It looks good to me. Vertex color looks fine to me.

The material settings do not have a big impact anymore as soon as a mesh features vertex color. You could just as much set environment and diffuse color to white and the two others to black. But it does not matter eitherway.

I usually switch off two-sided rendered faces. The performance inpact is not big, but you could just aswell do without.

The two-sided render is used by those two little flaps next to the dangling string-things. I guess I could just double-side those, probably less of a performance impact.

Yes, infragris we tested this earlier with the other clothing we have been pumping out lately and it looked very fitting.

Version with a leather belt, courtesy of Worsas. I'm looking into making this one more ornamental.
