River

Postby Wollibeebee » 23 Feb 2013, 05:43

Is anyone else keen to add the Valenwood side of the Strid to our Mod?

It'd help with compatibility with a valenwood mod, and potentially even promote the creation of one once the GC is out. More importantly we would have an actual river, not a weird lilly-padded ocean.

I have some screens, but I'm to tired to add some captions.

Here are the Valenwood cells from SG's heightmap, it's only the top cells that either touch the river or connect to two cells that touch a river (for the sake of having corners). It would barely need decorating, just a few unpassable, view obstructing cliffs and trees,:

The Thirr River is in Morrowind.

... but what exactly is the problem with adding the other side in the Valenwood mod?

I'm not opposed to making a few decorative cells around our borders with provinces that are not being made (by reputable people). In the even that mods show up to claim these regions we can work with them to make everything work right. It is a bit odd that we have border rivers which will be beaches and so on, we can always make the way impassable, much like Oblivion and TR.

I'm fine with that, it actually never bothered me in oblivion.

Because rivers turned into beaches suck, Scamp. Also, it would be harder for a potential Valenwood mod as they would have to remove our cells and remake new ones that merge better with their region and ours, which means adding our resources to their data.

Well, the trees across the river ar not suddenly going to change though, compared to those on our side. They will have to use some of our stuff to make it look right, or vice versa.
Tarius: I have now conquered the galaxy twice and am working on a third. Once thats out of me, I will be back to work.
TDF: Which game is that(I assume its a game and not real life)
The Khan: If it was real life, we would know about it. And I dont think he means this Galaxy.
Tarius: Yes, I really lead a secret double life where I am a galactic overlord.

Perhaps in real life this would make sense and it may end up that way in game, but region changes are dramatic, so I would imagine that province changes, even across a river would be similar.

However we will simply add a few cells in our style and if someone come along to make another province we can work with them to make the changes needed for everything to work seamlessly.

Cool, cool cool cool. Best open a claim scamp. Although its best if UBS done after we finish all the current claims and you make a new gc merge, do you think?

What does UBS mean? I googled and found Uninterruptible Battery System.

That was meant to be "it's" believe it or not.

Edit: scamp, while its been discussed, your currently using the gc_rock_grass texture, would you like me to make a new one to use on the river the way you have that fits a bit better? Something that appears to be more like algae or kelp.

Sounds good! I was already a bit worried about that grass being partially underwater, kinda weird and unrealistic.

Here's an alpha of the Strid River, the lower area will be the same as the GC, and the upper area will be more like the NGC - particularly in the tree types.

This makes the river more believable as it is very clearly not a beach, and the mountain/hill/slope makes it look better in the distant land because the cell cut-off is not visible. There's also a road there, which is part of the Valenwood Heightmap, but as we don't have any roads to connect to that part of Valenood (the proper road is in the the Weald.) I'll just stick a little dock there and make it a smuggler's secret path

Scamp, or anyone else, would you like me to decortate it?

P.S: the file is dirty, just load it after the GC merge and then throw it out.

What do you mean, 'here's an alpha'? I don't see any file.

No pressure. Interesting to see we actually have one of these buffer zones, since they've been discussed a couple of times lately.
