Creature Concepts

Postby SamirA » 29 Jan 2014, 19:53

Here I will be posting creature concepts and I encourage others to do so as well. We need to liven Cyrodiil up with some "less generic fantasy" more "elder scrolls crazy" type creatures. We have a few concepts floating about that I will compile here from other areas as well. Mostly they are Revenants.

To start off I will be posting two creature designs that I came up with. The quality of the first image is not the greatest but it does the trick. Feel free to give these things names.

and here is one I drew last night. Tentatively called a Golan as a reference to Gollum who it kind of resembles.

Revenant Creatures (I am not including the newt as we already have it modeled)

Nice stuff :)

I don't have any drawings since I can't... well, draw. But I have been thinking of how to weirdify sheep, but without going overboard. My idea was to mix the fur on these dogs:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komondor

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puli

... with the horns on these sheep:

Maybe someone with talent can draw something up to that idea, if you think it appropriate :)

Worsas has been working on the farm type creatures at SHotN and we are probably going to adapt those models to our needs. I don't know if he can do that king of "wool" on the goat model they have, but the horns are certainly possible and I imagine the wool as well. Would certainly make for some cool sheep.

I'm working on a farm critter for Colovia right now that's based on a llama.

I also kind of like the idea of domesticated pygmy elephants for the Highlands, to tie into Skyrim's mammoths.

Something I was thinking about relating to the Imperial permissiveness towards necromancy: Empire-sanctioned undead. We know that the Empire allows necromancy, and donates the bodies of criminals for this cause. There's even mention about actual undead in service to the Empire as messengers and guards.

It would be pretty simple to slap some legion armor on a skeleton, put a red diamond stamp on the side of the skull, and maybe a small message in its inventory: "This revenant has been authorized by Imperial Authorities. All damage, vandalism, or exorcism are punishable under Imperial Law. If found, please report to the Imperial Commission of Arkatic Sciences, Hestra Isle, the Imperial City."

I like the message you included. Outside of Sancre Tor where might these guys be found?

Imperial Vaults, emperor's tombs, places in the Imperial Palace and fortresses nobody's supposed to go. Idle (non-hostile) messengers could pop up anywhere the public won't see them. Wasn't there a plan to include a decommissioned Battlespire somewhere down the line?

They could also show up outside of Imperial institutions: the old Niben battlemage aristocracy considers the keeping of dead servitors an ancient privilege for guarding their tombs and villas. And any of the Niben's sanctioned necromancers could have one hanging around, perhaps with a more personalized message.

I was also thinking about a unique type of undead for the Niben necromany tradition: since they're not allowed to use any human bodies but those donated by the government, they've learned to make servants from animal bones, usually birds. We could have these little bird-skull guys potter around the eastern cities, carrying messages, offering to ferry you over the river - they're so common the locals don't even think about them anymore.

EDIT: I made a little sketch. Apologies for horrible quality.

A Niben Marrowbird, popular as messenger and ferryman. He has little bells on his beak so you can tell where he is, and wears a Colovian hat because someone was trying to be funny.

I think that any undead protectors of places where people live would either look like statues or not look undead period to keep a sense of aesthetic.
Tarius: I have now conquered the galaxy twice and am working on a third. Once thats out of me, I will be back to work.
TDF: Which game is that(I assume its a game and not real life)
The Khan: If it was real life, we would know about it. And I dont think he means this Galaxy.
Tarius: Yes, I really lead a secret double life where I am a galactic overlord.

Which aesthetic, though? That of Nibennum? We barely know anything of the place. Making them statues or something kind of defeats the purpose of having undead in the first place, and that's the very point: to underline the strangeness and deviating morality of the Nibenese.

I don't like the idea of having undead messengers and the such. I do though like having them as guardians of the treasures any mortal being would die to have no mater what oath he/she has taken like grown jewels etc...

I like the idea of those constructed bird undeads a lot. We just have to look about how and where to set them in scene.

Well, are you planning on making death be constantly reminded upon those in their settlements? If not, it would see odd and out of place. Besides, it makes sense that the rich people would dress up their minions to look nice.

I really like the idea of little skeleton bird familiars, it's fun and unique and interesting. Tarius, these wouldn't be used for every settlement I'd imagine, mainly in the strongholds of the Nibenese mageocracy. And I doubt they care too much what the common folk think of them. Come on people, necromancy is legal in Cyrodiil and we should do something interesting with it.

Here's my initial concept for a Colovian elephant: https://www.dropbox.com/s/oxnt3qyz8p2fp1y/elephant.JPG

It would be about the size of a cow in-game, and used similarly by Colovian farmers for milk, cheese, and leather. The idea basically being that they're a tamed, domesticated version of the mammoths that still run wild in Skyrim in the same way that the Colovians are a "refined" version of the Nords.

I like the birds as well. Maybe they are the skiff pilots for the dead?

I also like this elephant thing, though I question the need for a farm animal rather than a hostile. Perhaps there are wild versions that are a bit more crazy looking as well? We really need to add to our creature list, or we are going to be reliant on far too many goblins and skeleton variants.

Rough sketch for a critter which I am tentatively calling the bighorn: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xeiolks5bc71aoz/bighorn.JPG

I guess since this appears to be the active thread now, I'll post my old concepts here as well.

Cockatrice: http://i.imgur.com/OzB7u.png
Manticore: https://www.dropbox.com/s/wfqfa66w71loqx1/manticore.png
Nibenese horse-thing: https://www.dropbox.com/s/x255bt0nm5lg7jt/eqlingua.png

They really need to be re-drawn though.

Maybe? I admit, they probably shouldn't be used in densely populated areas, but I do think Nibenay should show both more undead and more interaction with the undead than any other region. We could make a variation of the creature with cloth wrapped around the bony bits for in public, but it should still be recognizable as undead, I think. The same could happen for more humanoid undead, though I'll defend having just plain undead roaming around in the battlemage castles: the Niben battlemages would want their undead to be recognizable as such, since it is an aristocratic privilege to have them around in the first place.

They'd be perfect for that! Hadn't even thought of it.

Here's v2 of the cockatrice, very similar but re-drawn from scratch with a little more detail.
